Walnut Calabash

I’m extremely proud to announce that this bowl has been purchased by the Country Dance and Song Society as a commemorative bowl for the celebration of their centennial in 2015. Large bowls like this are a perfect symbol of sharing within a community, and of abundance. CDSS has been a part of my life since 1986, and I’m very pleased that something from my hands will be part of the centennial. One thing that this bowl will get filled with is favorite dance memories, so if any of you Bay Area dancers would like to add your own dance memory to the bowl, just write it out and either send it to me or drop it off at Sebastopol Gallery and I’ll send it with the bowl when I ship it to CDSS. I’ve always loved these big, round-bottomed bowls. This one is the outermost layer of a large piece of walnut that I cored into 3 bowls. If you’d like to see a nice discussion of the classic Hawai’ian bowl shapes, here’s a good link, courtesy of the Honolulu Woodturners, a club with more than its share of top-notch turners: http://honoluluwoodturners.org/tips_calabash.html

At last the largest bowl is done. There’s no foot, just a smooth, rounded bottom. The bowl is about 13″ across and almost 7 high, pretty substantial. If you need a bowl to hug, this is a good one.

This piece of walnut has lovely color, with lots of those yummy peachy overtones.

The fantastic feather grain on the bottom was a delightful surprise.

Plenty of room for, well, anything.

The middle core became a serving bowl for my friend Claire.

This was the smallest of the 3 cores.
