Feasting Platter

It’s the time of year when huge plates of food begin to appear on our tables. With that thought in mind, I pulled out a wide plank of bigleaf maple that I’ve been saving and made this platter this afternoon. Out of curiosity, I took a couple of pictures midway through oiling it.

Bigleaf maple is one of the softer maples, but it’s known for intensely figured grain. Pretty nice even without oil.

I’ve just oiled the left half, using Mike Mahoney’s walnut oil. It’s my standard finish, easy to apply and easy to take care of.

I’m pretty happy with this. The weight is just right, too, not too heavy. The platter is 15 inches across.

Serving plates need nice, wide bases so they don’t tip over when you’re trying to spear that last bit of sweet potato or turkey. I gripped the recess in the foot with an expansion chuck to turn the face.
